UTPA to host fourth annual bioethics conference

The University of Texas-Pan American is hosting its fourth annual bioethics conference March 20-23.

The conference, "Bioethics: Health Care and Treatment in Education and Practice," is free and open to the public, thanks to sponsors McAllen Anesthesia Consultants, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, the Pan American Collaboration for Ethics in the Professions (PACE), the Coalition Against Violence and Exploitation (CAVE), HHMI, College of Arts and Humanities, College of Science Math, College of Health Sciences and Human Services, UTPA Continuing Education, and local hospitals and businesses in the Rio Grande Valley.

Conference organizers of the four-day event hope to engage UTPA, local health care practitioners and the community in a discussion of ethics, education, health care and the practice of medicine, as well as encourage ethics and values in health care education and research.

The conference begins Tuesday, March 20 with a welcome reception at 7 p.m. in the Visitor's Center, followed by three days of panel discussions, seminars, paper presentations and poster contests. Keynote speakers include Dr. Robin Fuchs-Young, cancer researcher at Texas A&M Health Science Center; Laura Zarate, Healing Through Art and Arte Sana; Dr. Janet Stemwedel, philosopher and blogger at San Jose State University; Dr. Carlos Cardenas, chairman of the board of Doctors Hospital at Renaissance; and Dr. Leonel Vela, dean of the Regional Academic Health Center, UT Health Science Center.

Seminar topics include competition vs. cooperation in medical school and medical education; diabetes, obesity, health literacy and other public health challenges; technology, confidentiality and patient rights; and ethical issues in health care fields such as nursing, counseling, social work and physician assistance.
