Summer theatre season to sizzle at UTPA

If you are looking for somewhere to cool off during these hot summer days and enjoy a unique theatre experience, the UTPA University Theatre Productions presents P.A.S.S. (Pan American Summer Stock) 2011 beginning June 30.

This summer season enjoy two performances - "Top Girls" and "To Kill a Mockingbird" - at the Albert L. Jeffers Theatre, located in the Communication Arts and Sciences Building on the corner of University Drive and Sugar Road in Edinburg.

First up on the schedule is "Top Girls" by Carly Churchill, which will run from June 30 - July 2, 8 p.m. and July 3, 2 p.m. Considered a serious comedy, "Top Girls" features Marlene, who has been promoted to managing director of a London employment agency and is celebrating the big promotion. She finds out she has to pay a price to ascend from proletarian roots to the executive suite. The play is directed by graduate student Cynthia Santos.

The second play is the classic "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee and dramatized by Christopher Sergel. This Pulitzer Prize-winning novel comes to life in this powerful and poignant drama stage play, which is being directed by graduate student Richard Edmondson. The production runs July 7-9 at 8 p.m. and July 10 at 2 p.m.

Ticket prices include reserve seating, $12, general admission, $8, non-UTPA students with school ID, $3, and UTPA students, faculty and staff with a valid UTPA ID, free plus one free guest. No children below the third grade will be admitted to the performances.
