Four finalists have been selected for consideration of the Vice President for Student Affairs position at The University of Texas-Pan American, and starting Monday, the University community will have the opportunity to meet with them.
Two of the four are familiar faces to UTPA: Dr. Calvin Phillips, associate vice president of Enrollment and Student Services and dean of students, and Dr. Magdalena Hinojosa, associate vice president and dean of admissions and enrollment services.
The other two candidates are Dr. Gary M. Biller, currently the vice president for student services at Arkansas Tech University and Dr. Maria Maricela Fuentes-Martin, now the associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students at The University of Texas at Brownsville/Texas Southmost College.
Campus visits for candidates are scheduled Jan. 31 through Feb. 4. During the visits, each candidate will meet with the students, faculty and staff in open forums that will be held at the Student Union Theater from 1 p.m. to 1:55 p.m.
Phillips will meet with faculty, students and staff Monday, Jan. 31. Biller will visit the campus Wednesday, Feb. 2. Hinojosa will meet with the University community Thursday, Feb. 3. Fuentes-Martin will come to UTPA Friday, Feb. 4.
Phillips has been with UTPA since August 2009 and is responsible for all aspects of student life, from overseeing the student health services and intramural and club sports to heading the feasibility study of the Student Union expansion and implementing the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education.
Before coming to UTPA, Phillips was the associate vice chancellor for student affairs at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, N.C., an assistant professor in educational leadership, counseling and postsecondary education at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa and was the director of the academic success program at Shippensburg University in Shippensburg, Penn.
Phillips earned his bachelor of science in secondary education social studies from Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., his master of arts in student personnel from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania in Slippery Rock, Penn. and his doctorate of education in administration and leadership studies from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, Penn. He also took additional courses at the Harrisburg campuses of Temple University and Penn State University and at the University of Pittsburgh.
Biller has been with Arkansas Tech University since 2000. As the vice president for student services Biller is responsible for all areas of student life from housing and wellness to parking services and career services. He previously served as the vice president of student affairs at Dickinson State University in Dickinson, N.D., director of student development services at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, Ala. and held various positions at the University of Kansas. He earned his bachelor of science in social sciences and his master of science in counseling from Oklahoma State University and his doctorate in higher education administration from the University of Kansas.
Hinojosa, who has been with UTPA since 2005, oversees Admission and New Student Services, Office of the Registrar and the Student Data Analysis and Projects Office.
Previously, Hinojosa served as registrar and director of admissions at Texas A&M University-Kingsville and assistant director of financial assistance and scholarship coordinator at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
Hinojosa earned her bachelor of business administration from then Texas A&I University in Kingsville, her master of public administration from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and her doctor of education from Texas A&M University-Kingsville/Corpus Christi.
Fuentes-Martin, who has been with UTB/TSC since 2000, has served as dean of students and associate vice president for student affairs. She supervises five departments as well as numerous programs and services in the dean of students office.
Before coming to UTB/TSC, Fuentes-Martin served as the associate dean of students at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and assistant director of multicultural affairs at University of Notre Dame.
The Vice President for Student Affairs position was previously called the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services. The University changed the name after the retirement of Dr. John Edwards in December 2010.
