San Juan Police Chief Juan Gonzalez speaks at a forum called "Domestic Violence is Still a Social Taboo in the 21st Century," hosted by The University of Texas-Pan American Border Health Office and Mujeres Unidas, Oct. 18 at the University Library Auditorium in observance of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Speakers on the panel included Rosa Reyna, 206th state district judge; Jaime Ortiz from the South Texas Civil Rights Projects; Belinda Salinas-Anzaldua and Amy Boyona from the Hidalgo County Criminal District Attorney's Office; and Susana Benavides, a victim and survivor of domestic violence. The goal of the event was to let people know that domestic violence is a crime, but there is help and hope.
