Judith Mendoza, left, a student at South Texas College, receives help from Marilyn Hagerty, UTPA's director of Academic Advisement and Mentor Center, with transferring to the University to pursue a bachelor's degree in education.

"Step into Summer Transfer Thursday," held July 16, is a new event hosted by The University of Texas-Pan American in an effort to help students make an easy transition from another college or university into UTPA. For transfer student Judith Mendoza, it was a big help in getting everything done early.

Mendoza, a South Texas College student, will be transferring to The University of Texas-Pan American in the fall to pursue a bachelor's degree in education. She said her transition to UTPA was made a lot easier by attending the event.

"If not for this event I would have been lost and it would have taken me a lot longer to complete my transfer," Mendoza said. "It took me no more than an hour to finish everything. All the help I need is right here."

The event was first introduced on a Thursday in April and has been held on a Thursday once a month after that. Mayra Martinez, UTPA admissions counselor, said the event has been a success from the start.

"This is the first time we held an event like this. We felt it was necessary to give our transfer students more attention," Martinez said. "The events have been successful by helping students make substantial progress in their transition."

The event is open to students transferring from South Texas College, Texas State Technical College, The University of Texas at Brownsville and other colleges or universities.

Martinez describes this event as a one-stop shop. Students are required to bring only a transcript from their current college or university in order to take advantage of the benefits. Students will have transcripts evaluated by admission staff and if a University application has been completed and requirements met, then students will get accepted on the spot and registered for transfer orientation. Financial aid and academic advisers are also present to assist students in completing the transfer process.

Admission staff suggest that students complete the University application before attending. If a student has not done so, applications will also be available at the event or they can apply at

"In June alone we evaluated 40 transcripts and applications. From those 40, most of them got accepted and were able to complete their transfer at the event," Martinez said. "In providing this resource we have received positive feedback."

Martinez has big goals for the future success of this event.

"Our goal is to hold more events that will bring in transfer students," Martinez said. "Most importantly though we want to see an increase in participation from our UTPA community. This will definitely help students have an easier transition into UTPA."

July 16 was the last date for "Step into Summer Thursday," but students can look forward to other events in fall, spring and following summer.
