The University of Texas-Pan American's Southwest Border Nonprofit Resource Center announces changes to its Stronger Together Initiative request for proposals opportunity. Proposals are being accepted now through July 2 for competitive grants up to $20,000. The competitive grants will be awarded to local faith-based and community organizations in need of internal organizational capacity building that leads to addressing broad economic recovery needs of residents.

Local U.S. congressmen are collaborating with UTPA's Southwest Border Nonprofit Resource Center's Stronger Together Initiative to implement new federal funding the SBNRC was awarded to strengthen area nonprofit's organizational development during the national economic downturn and recovery. Pictured front left to right are Lucila Lagace, director, SBNRC's Stronger Together Initiative, and Desiree Mendez-Caltzonztint, Office of Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15); and back, Victor Martin De Leon, Office of Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28).
The funds are part of the larger Stronger Together Initiative housed at the Southwest Border Nonprofit Resource Center. Earlier this year, the center received almost $1 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through its Strengthening Communities Fund, created by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Of the total amount, the center will award up to $600,000 in competitive grants through this funding opportunity to local nonprofits serving Hidalgo and Starr Counties.

Lucila Lagace, director of Stronger Together, explains, "Stronger Together is a unique opportunity for nonprofits not only to receive free training and one-to-one assistance but also to secure financial assistance for those development needs that are not in their budget today."
