UTPA Alumni Association nets $15,000 from Pan Am Classic

The University of Texas-Pan American Alumni Association and the City of Edinburg hosted the 21st Annual Pan Am Classic May 7 at Los Lagos Golf Course in Edinburg.

The University of Texas-Pan American Alumni Association raised about $15,000 for scholarships and student activities at the 21st Annual Pan Am Classic. The golf tournament was at Los Lagos Golf Course in Edinburg and involved 27 two-member teams competing in three flights. Each flight offered prizes totaling $2,000.

This year the association raised about $15,000 for scholarships and student activities. The golf tournament has raised about $630,000 since it began two decades ago.

The tournament had 54 players competing in two-person teams in three flights. The flights each offered prizes totaling $2,000.

First flight winners were: first place: Julio De La Garza and Luis Castillo, City of Edinburg; second place: George Arriola and Orlando Montalvo; third place: Dean LaFever and Bill Werly, Texas Gas Service; and fourth place: Jim McGurk and Jim Board.

Second flight winners were: first place: Jimmy Jones and Victor Garza, City of Edinburg; second place: Bobby Hinojosa and Homero Vasquez, Texas Valley Communities Foundation; third place: Jose Acero and Hector Casas, The Social Club; fourth place: Ed Jimenez and Alma Garza, City of Edinburg.

Third flight winners were: first place: Pat Hovland and Larry Talbert, Gateway Printing; second place: Matthew Martinez and Omar Maldonado, Texas Valley Communities Foundation; third place: Juan Lopez and Rolly Perez, City of Edinburg; fourth place: Jay De Leon and Armando Almazan, Valley Coca Cola.
