The University of Texas Pan-American Mariachi Juvenil won first place in the College-University Division at the 15th Annual National Mariachi Vargas Group Competition in San Antonio Nov. 20.
The competition is the largest and most competitive mariachi group competition in the United States with nearly 1,000 mariachi musicians competing, including ensembles from Harvard University, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, Texas State University, and The University of Texas at Austin, among others.
"I heard our students play and I was extremely proud to see our students perform with confidence, style and excellent musicianship. The audience at both the competition and the performance on Saturday evening were wowed," said Dr. Dahlia Guerra, dean of the College of Arts and Humanities. "Our students worked very hard, practicing long hours for many months to achieve this accomplishment. This is great recognition for our university especially since the other groups were from high profile institutions."
The UTPA Mariachi Juvenil was also invited to open for the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza concert on Nov. 21, performing for an audience of more than 3,000.
All three mariachi ensembles - The UTPA Mariachi Aztlan, the UTPA Mariachi Juvenil, and the UTPA Mariachi Femenil will perform concerts on December 12 and 13 at 2 p.m. at the UTPA Fine Arts Auditorium. The UTPA Folkloric Dance Company will also be featured.
