Staff members of The University of Texas-Pan American's award-winning magazine Panorama are headed to Fort Worth April 25 to be recognized for their most recent ADDY awards.
The 2008 edition of Panorama received two gold ADDYs and one silver ADDY at the American Advertising Federation's district level competition which includes Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.
"Only gold winners from the local level are advanced to the district and only gold winners from district are advanced to nationals," said Dr. Kimberly Selber, Panorama's co-adviser. "Just to give you an idea of how big this competition is, there are about 60,000 entries at the local level in the United States. That number is whittled down to about 1,500 entries at the national level - about 2.5 percent. And only a small number of those will win. So it's a real honor for us to make it that far."
The 140-page magazine, which is free to the community, showcased many aspects of University life including student organizations, sports and features about each of the colleges.
Selber said Panorama is distinctive because of the different perspectives it offers.
"Every year we have a new staff of writers and designers. Sometimes we are lucky enough to have someone on staff for more than just one year," Selber said. "So, one of the most unique aspects of this publication is the revolving staff door. Every year we get new voices, new visions, and new ideas."
Selber said she and co-adviser Donna Pazdera try to guide and teach the students without infusing too much of their own opinions into the publication.
"We tell the students to push the boundaries and be brave," Selber said. "I think it rivals anything you'd see in a professionally published magazine."
The magazine is entered in several other competitions which will be announced in the near future. The 2009 edition of Panorama will be available the first week of May.
