The University of Texas-Pan American Wellness and Recreational Sports Complex (WRSC) has been selected as the winner of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Outstanding Sports Facility Award.
The award will be presented to UTPA at the NIRSA Annual Conference and Recreational Sports Expo on April 4 in Charlotte, N.C. The NIRSA Outstanding Sports Facility Awards are presented to creative, innovative designs of new, renovated, or expanded collegiate recreational facilities. UTPA is one of the six recipients to be honored with the award.
According to Watson, F&S Partners, an architecture and interior design firm based in Texas, who designed the complex, applied for the award in December.
"The facility is a state-of-the-art campus recreation center that uses an open concept design, wireless Internet, glass to reduce the closed in feeling and high ceilings for ventilation," said Watson.
The 156,000-square-foot WRSC opened Aug. 27, 2007 to promote a healthy lifestyle amongst the University community. The $26 million facility, located on the corner of Sugar Road and Schunior Street in Edinburg offers students, staff and faculty numerous indoor and outdoor features including more than 10,000-square-feet of weights and cardio equipment, a 34-foot climbing wall, a walking-jogging track, racquetball courts, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, aerobic studios with digital sound, outdoor tennis and sand volleyball courts, and an outdoor leisure pool with fountain, spa, and a lazy river. Watson said that an average of 1,500 students, staff and faculty workout at the WRSC a day.
According to Watson, the award will put UTPA on the map in terms of campus recreation. Since the WRSC opened it has been recognized by Construction Builders Association of Texas with the Facility of Merit award, and acknowledged by "Recreation Management Magazine" and "Athletic Business Magazine."
