After four and a half wonderful years as President of The University of Texas-Pan American, I have informed Interim Chancellor Kenneth Shine of my desire to retire, effective January 30. The pressures of the last several months have seriously taxed my health and well-being and impaired my ability to lead the University with the intensity and focus I believe necessary. It is time for me to move on. I look forward to writing a bright new chapter in my life and to finding new ways to contribute to the development of our beloved Rio Grande Valley.

We have much reason to be optimistic about the future of UTPA. The talent, commitment and work ethic of the entire UTPA community has far exceeded my expectations. I will tell the new President that this community has far exceeded my expectations. I will tell the new President that there is nothing this community of students, faculty, staff and supporters cannot do. We have a brilliant and caring new Chancellor who knows and loves South Texas and who will find just the right leader for UTPA. And on this historic day, we begin a whole new era in our nation, one that the students of UTPA will shape in unprecedented ways. It is a time to look forward.

When I came to the Rio Grande Valley, I fell in love - with the University, the sincerity and sweetness of our very smart students, the gentle beauty of our landscape, the sense of community, the spirituality and kindness of the people, their intelligence and dedication. There is so much good here. Thank you for your welcome, your support and for all your help in our efforts to make The University of Texas-Pan American a place of pride and progress. I leave it in your hands.
