More than 100 elementary students from across the Rio Grande Valley participated in El ABC de la Ciencia (The ABC's of Science) design competition at The University of Texas-Pan American April 7. The program was developed and organized by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), a UTPA student organization. SHPE is a national organization of professional engineers that helps serve as role models in the Hispanic community. The goal of the competition was to help elementary students discover their natural problem-solving skills and show them how to apply what they learned in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). SHPE offers these types of programs at all school levels to encourage youth to think about careers in the STEM fields and feel confident about their knowledge and abilities in the subjects. Pictured are some of the students constructing towers out of LEGO blocks, which was one of the many problem-solving activities held during the day. To learn more about the program, call 956/381-3510.
