As part of Pan American Days April 14-17 at The University of Texas-Pan America, the Integrated Global Knowledge and Understanding (IGkNU) Collaboration will sponsor a presentation April 14 on post-Fidel Castro Cuba by Dr. Victor Bulmer-Thomas.

Bulmer-Thomas is a world-renowned expert on Latin American and Caribbean economies and international relations and is currently a visiting professor at the Latin American Caribbean Center at Florida Atlantic University. A former director of the Royal institute of International Affairs in London, he is also Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of London and an Honorary Research Fellow with the University's Institute of Latin American Studies. In addition, he has served as a consultant for the European Commission, the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Inter-American Development Bank. His research and publications has focused primarily on issues of Latin American regional integration, political economy, free trade models and economic history.

Bulmer-Thomas' presentation, which is free and open not only to students, faculty and staff, but also to the public, will start at noon in the UTPA Engineering Building, Room 1.300. While reservations are not required, seating is limited.

"IGkNU's collaboration with the Office of International Programs in presenting this event during Pan American Days reinforces the University's goals of increased collaboration with other universities in research and scholarship and to bring current events of global importance for discussion locally," said Nick Weimer, IGkNU manager. "Dr. Bulmer-Thomas' presentation - 'Cuba without Fidel' - will address the impact this change in leadership will have on policies and issues important to the United States and globally."

Created under a five-year, $2.5 million federal grant from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to establish an Intelligence Community Center for Academic Excellence at UTPA, IGkNU's role is to educate students with the critical thinking and other necessary skills to become the next generation of not only national security and intelligence leaders but leaders in all sectors of the global economy at large. IGkNu is administered under the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
