The Ballet Folklórico at The University of Texas-Pan American, under the artistic direction of Francisco Muñoz, will continue its annual concert series ALEGRIA 2007-2008 on Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 2-3 at 2 p.m., Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m., and Feb. 9-10 at 2 p.m.

ALEGRIA 2007-2008 will feature a collection of choreographies of the folk dance cultures and traditions of Mexico. The company of 24 dancers with live musical accompaniment provided by Mariachi México Lindo will create a spectacular collaboration of color, drama and excitement.

Choreographies presented will include traditional dances from the states of Michoacán, Tamaulipas, Guerrero, and Jalisco.

Corridos Mexicanos, a ballet by Rafael Zamarripa, will also be presented. This choreographic intent focuses on the corrido ranchero, romantico, and macho. The Mexican corrido always follows a dramatic pattern that focuses on human conflict. Corridos Mexicanos culminates in a love triangle tragedy.

New to the stage will be Soplo Vital, a new choreography by Francisco Muñoz. Soplo Vital combines the influence and mixture of the African, European and Mexican cultures in a ritualistic dance suite depicting spiritualism. The word spiritualism derives from the Latin word spiritus. In the Spanish language, spiritus translates to soplo vital, a breath of life.

Returning to the stage will be Calabaceados, a choreography showcasing lively and energetic movements which characterize the vaquero (cowboy) dances of the state of Baja California. The dance, Calabaceados, is a manifestation of the broncos' (wild horses) turns and kicks as they set off dust storms in playful amusement. The popular norteño music of the area yields additional vivacity to this exhilarating dance suite. In spring 2007, Calabaceados was selected as one of 10 best choreographies presented for adjudication at the American College Dance Festival at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. The Ballet has been invited to present Calabaceados at the National Dance Association/American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance national convention to be held in Fort Worth in April.
