At this time UTPA would like to express their condolences to the Paredes Family in their time of sadness and grief. We ask the UTPA community (students, faculty and staff) to keep the family in their prayers and thoughts. Not only has the UTPA community lost a professor, but also a friend and warmhearted individual who impacted the lives of many UTPA students and those who he met along the way during his journey in life.

Paredes came to UTPA in 1982 where he not only taught math, but also served as the director of the UTPA Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program, the LSAMP Bridge to the Doctorate Program, and the Texas Pre-freshman Engineering Program (TexPREP), a program that provided academic enrichment to countless Valley students year after year.

He earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Utah-Salt Lake City in 1985, a Master of Science in Mathematics from the University of Utah-Salt Lake City in 1978, and a Bachelor of Science in mathematics from the University of Chile in 1971.

Dr. Edwin LeMaster, dean of the College of Science and Engineering, said Paredes will be missed greatly by all who knew him professionally and personally.

"Dr. Paredes will be sorely missed because of his enthusiastic support of student scholarship and research," LeMaster said.

LeMaster said the College of Science and Engineering will be supporting the creation of the Dr. Miguel Paredes Endowed Research Scholarship Fund for Mathematics.
