The University of Texas-Pan American kicked off its sixth annual Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) Week with the Congressional Dinner at the UTPA Fieldhouse Sunday, Sept. 23. During the event, hosted by UTPA, the Office of Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15), City of Edinburg, Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, and Anheuser-Busch, more than 500 members of Congress, corporate and media sponsors, local business and community leaders packed the fieldhouse to celebrate the beginning of HESTEC scheduled for Sept. 24-29. Pictured left to right are Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28), Congressman Charles Gonzalez (TX-20), UTPA Vice President/Provost for Academic Affairs Dr. Paul Sale, Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15), and Vice President for Community Engagement Dr. Roland Arriola. HESTEC is designed to expose students, educators and community members to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. This year, for the first time in the history of the University, the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives - Speaker Nancy Pelosi - will visit the campus the morning of Thursday, Sept. 27 to speak at HESTEC Robotics Day. In addition, HESTEC will offer the South Texas community a free day of entertainment during its annual Community Day Saturday, Sept. 29, which will feature the Discovery Channel's Mythbusters, Billy Ray Cyrus, Belanova and cast members from the television show "George Lopez" - Belita Moreno and Valente Rodriguez.
