To better support second-year students, The University of Texas-Pan American will host the first sophomore conference Tuesday, Aug. 21. The conference titled "The Second Lap: Extreme Sophomore Experience" is open to the first 250 registered sophomores who sign up.
"The purpose of the sophomore conference is to assist UTPA second-year students in accomplishing their individual academic goals," Marta Lopez, director of special programs, said. "The conference will provide sophomore students with the opportunity to address questions and issues that they feel are important to their success."
The conference will take place from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on the UTPA campus. In addition to informative sessions on academic, financial, and personal/social topics, the conference will also provide free lunch and snacks. Scholarships, gift certificates, MP3 players, and other door prizes will be raffled off throughout the day.
UTPA created the conference, which is the first of its kind in South Texas, to help increase the retention rate among sophomores at the University - which is currently about 53 percent. The conference is sponsored by the Divisions of Academic Affairs, Enrollment and Student Services and External Affairs.
"The sophomore conference is designed to be interactive, allowing UTPA sophomores the opportunity to ask questions in a relaxed atmosphere," Lopez said. "This conference will allow students to begin their second year at UTPA on the right track."
