The Edinburg World Birding Center will benefit from a project organized by The University of Texas-Pan American as part of a University of Texas System-wide initiative titled United to Serve, held each year in honor of National Volunteer Week, this year April 15-21.
Planned for Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., the beautification project at the center will include mulching plant beds and planting new beds, cleaning and planting wetlands, working on observation decks, pruning trees and plants, and building a pergola.
"This project, which was chosen by a 12-member committee of students, faculty and staff, was selected for its significance to the local community as well as for the number of volunteers it could accommodate. The United to Serve project provides an opportunity to not only our students but the faculty and staff to make a difference in the community and to realize the importance of lifelong volunteerism," said Amy Martin, coordinator of the UTPA Leadership Academy and co-chair of the project.
Last year's project, which provided significant improvements to outdoor activities space for families of the Mujeres Unidas Nueva Vida Housing Program, drew approximately 40 volunteers. This year, Martin said, they anticipate 150-200 volunteers.
While the Birding Center is providing the majority of the supplies required, support is still needed to fund any remaining supplies needed as well as transportation, lunch and refreshments for volunteers.
The United to Serve project will also culminate the activities of Student Leadership Week April 17-21 at the UTPA campus. Titled "Be the Change," the week, sponsored by the Leadership Academy and the University Program Board, will kick off 5:30 p.m., April 17 at the Student Union Theater. A Salute to Student Leaders Luncheon will be held noon-1 p.m., April 19 in the University Ballroom and that evening at 8 p.m. Leadership at the Lawn will be celebrated in the Student Union Quad with a free showing of the movie "Rocky Balboa."
