Walgreens awards scholarships to 19 UTPA pre-pharmacy students

Nineteen students from The University of Texas-Pan American and The University of Texas at Austin Cooperative Pharmacy Program were each awarded a $1,500 scholarship from Walgreens during a reception Oct. 19 in the University Ballroom.

This is the fifth year that Walgreens has given scholarships to students in the program and the first year Walgreens has awarded this many scholarships. Walgreens, the nation's largest drugstore chain, operates 5,515 stores in 47 states and Puerto Rico, and provides additional services to pharmacy patients and prescription drug and medical plans through Walgreens Health Services, its managed care division.

"The generosity expressed by Walgreens this year is simply fantastic. We are all very grateful for their support of the program and our students," said Dr. Amy Schwartz, assistant dean of the Cooperative Pharmacy Program.

Sophomore scholarship recipients are Patty Garcia, La Feria; Anyssa Garza, Roma; Eric Garza, Rio Hondo; Tarah Garza, Beeville; Aglaee Guerrero, La Joya; Joe Malacara, La Joya; O.J. Martinez, Mission; Amanda Rodriguez, Mission; and Sara Solis, Edinburg. Freshmen receiving the scholarship are Alex Farias, McAllen; Amanda Garcia, Brownsville; Andrea Nieto, Edinburg; Vanessa Perez, Zapata; Charlie Ramirez, Edinburg; Alec Regalado, Zapata; Vince Schoenmakers, Harlingen; Julio Tovar, Edinburg; John Villanueva, Edinburg; and Mayor Zapata, Edinburg.

The UTPA Cooperative Pharmacy Program accepts 14 high school seniors into the six-year program each year. Those admitted and who successfully complete the program will earn a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy.
