Two faculty members at The University of Texas-Pan American - Dr. Hugo Mejias, associate professor, Department of Modern Languages and Literature and Dr. Pamela Anderson-Mejias, associate professor, Department of English - have recently departed to China to participate in a faculty exchange program at Ocean University in Qingdao during the fall 2006 and spring 2007 semesters.
UTPA and Ocean University have agreed to jointly support a project to establish an exchange of faculty and students in languages, particularly Spanish. Mejias will lead the development of the Spanish program while Anderson-Mejias will teach English as a Foreign Language in Ocean University's English Department. She will also train teachers in Applied Linguistics.
In reciprocal exchange for the UTPA professors are Dr. Jing Liu, a member of Ocean University's Department of English faculty and Lu Zhiying, professor from the School of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language at Renmin University in Beijing. These two professors from China will be teaching at the UTPA's Department of English and the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, respectively.
University officials indicate the agreement and exchange of faculty will serve as a strong beginning toward implementing the University's goal of infusing inter-American and global perspective throughout the University community. The exchange program is supported by UTPA Departments of Modern Languages and Literatures and English, Office of the Provost, and the Office of International Programs
