One of the largest job fairs of the year for The University of Texas-Pan American, HESTEC College Students Career Expo, is scheduled for Sept. 29 at the UTPA Fieldhouse, located at 1201 W. University Drive, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

The Career Expo, sponsored by the UTPA Office of Career Services, will feature more than 70 corporations and organizations in search of the best and brightest South Texas has to offer. Some of the exhibitors include Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Ford Motor Company Fund, Kraft Foods Global, Inc., Microsoft, Texas Instruments, and many more.

"This particular career expo will be the biggest event for the semester. Last year over 1,500 students attended from UTPA and from other colleges including STC, UT Brownsville, Texas A&M-Kingsville, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. This year I anticipate over 2,000 students as this career expo has the potential to become a regional career fair for the Colleges of South Texas," said Velinda Reyes, director, UTPA Office of Career Services.

For those interested in attending the Career Expo, bus shuttles to the UTPA campus will be available from the following schools: South Texas College, The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and Texas A&M University-Kingsville. To sign up for the shuttle transportation, contact the Career Services offices at the respective colleges.

Those who will be attending the Career Expo are encouraged to dress professionally and bring copies of their résumés to submit to the exhibitors.

"It is wise to research the companies attending before hand either through the Web site or by talking to Career Services staff. Do not delay in preparing," Reyes said. "Update your résumés in advance of the career expo and practice networking and interview skills. Students should be prepared to ask questions as they meet with employers."

The Career Expo is one of many events held during UTPA's Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) Week, Sept. 25-30. HESTEC offers interactive workshops and activities for local, state and national teachers as well as middle and high school students. Throughout HESTEC Week, hosted by UTPA in conjunction with the Office of Congressman Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15), more than 1,000 educators and 3,000 students will have a rare opportunity to hear and learn from some of the best engineers, administrators, and CEO's of top companies and organizations in the United States.
