One of the highlights of the second annual Student Leadership Week held April 17-21 at The University of Texas-Pan American was a Salute the Student Leaders Award luncheon April 20 where five students were recognized for their unselfish service to the community and their potential to become tomorrow's leaders. Students are nominated based on academic achievement, demonstrated leadership and/or service to community. Thirty-one students were nominated. Pictured left to right are the 2006 award winners Annel Zamarron, senior math and psychology major from Mission; Jeanette Ferry-Gomez, senior English and history from Corpus Christi; Joseph (Joey) Nichols, a senior biology major from Harlingen; Linda Gonzalez, junior education major from Los Fresnos; and Lynda Laurin, a senior communication-advertising major from Brownsville. The weeklong schedule of activities designed to showcase the many ways student leaders make a difference on the UTPA campus was organized by the UTPA Student Leadership Academy and Program as part of National Student Leadership Week celebrated each April to encourage student leadership and service.
