College of Business Administration hosts second annual video workshop

The second annual "Capturing Consumption" Video Workshop sponsored by The University of Texas-Pan American College of Business Administration (COBA) will be held Saturday, April 22, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in the COBA Building.

The workshop, originally developed to provide doctoral students an opportunity to gain experience in video making to prepare and submit videos to academic conferences, will provide a forum for a larger number of video projects this year said Dr. Michael Minor, professor of marketing and international business and director of the UTPA Ph.D. program in international business.

"This second conference makes several important changes from last year's event," said Minor, who chairs the workshop's steering committee. "Last year we only showed videos made by Ph.D. students, and the videos were very academically oriented. This year we are encouraging undergraduate participation and also opening up the format to entertainment, promotional videos, and documentaries as well. We're not ready to compete with the Sundance Film Festival yet, but we expect each year's event to be bigger than the last."

The workshop is free and open to the public with lunch provided but those entering a video must fill out a submission form by April 10 and sign a release. Complete eligibility requirements and entry details are available at

Both morning and afternoon sessions are planned for the workshop. The morning session in the COBA Building, Room 110, will feature presentations by graduate students, primarily those working towards their doctorate from the College of Business Administration and master's students in the Department of Communication. Entries from other graduate as well as undergraduate students in the non-academic categories will be judged in the afternoon session in the COBA Building, Rooms 110 and 111. A panel of judges from the COBA, the Department of Communications, and the Office of University Relations will make decisions on entry acceptance as well as award top entries certificates for "Excellence," "Exceptional Merit" and "Honorable Mention" in each category. A "Best in Show" recognition will also be given.

"One of the advantages of this workshop is that we have technical experts commenting on the videos. Often students may have very good ideas, but can benefit from listening to someone who has experience and is willing to share pointers in terms of the director's or producer's role. We will definitely be able to provide that," Minor said.

Judges, comprised of the workshop steering committee members, include Minor; Chelse Benham, radio-television production supervisor in the Office of University Relations and a 1998 Emmy winner; Dr. David Sturges, associate professor in the Department of Management, Marketing and International Business and an experienced public relations professional and film maker; Dr. Kimberly Selber, assistant professor of communications with experience at top international advertising firms and a former assistant professor of advertising at UT Austin; and Dr. Fuat Firat, professor of marketing and chair of the Department of Management, Marketing and International Business.

Minor said last year's video topics included the underground economy in Cuba, traditional dress in Nigeria, and organizational dilemmas facing firemen as they fight fires. Two of this year's early entries are titled "Cucci or Gucci? Exploring the Consumption of Counterfeits on the U.S.-Mexico Border" and "Take Two Geckos and Call Me in the Morning," about the diffusion of traditional Chinese medicine as an alternative source of medical remedies in the United States.
