The University of Texas-Pan American will soon celebrate Homecoming 2006 with a week of tradition and school spirit, which includes adding a homecoming dance to this year's schedule.
The University Program Board, the Office of Student Development, the Student Union and UTPA Athletics are co-sponsoring the week's events which will run from Jan. 30-Feb. 4.
Beginning Monday, Jan. 30 Yard Art will be on display at the Quad all week. The art will consist of billboards that student organizations have created to encourage homecoming events and school spirit.
Also on display for the entire week will be a photo exhibit highlighting the University's history. The exhibit will be set up in the Student Union and display photos from old yearbooks, including some of the UTPA football team from years ago. Other events for Homecoming 2006 include a chance to meet the baseball team, a night of live music, a comedy night, a cheer contest, and an office decorating competition.
A Tailgate Party/Pep Rally, which will include the traditional burning of the UTPA letters, is set for Thursday, Feb. 2 at the Fieldhouse parking lot. The celebration will follow immediately after the men's basketball game against Texas A&M-International at 7:30 p.m. in the Fieldhouse.
New to this year's schedule is the forgotten tradition of holding a homecoming dance. The UTPA Homecoming Dance is a formal with a theme of "Touch of Class," set for Friday, Feb. 3 from 8 p.m.-midnight in the Fine Arts Courtyard. Guests are asked to wear strictly black and white attire.
The winners for Homecoming Queen and King will be announced at the dance and also be recognized at both the men's and women's basketball games Saturday, Feb. 4, as the week of homecoming events draws to a close. The UTPA Broncs will play St. Edward's College at 1:30 p.m., while the Lady Broncs will take on Indiana University Purdue University-Fort Wayne at 7 p.m. Both games will be played in the UTPA Fieldhouse.
