AIDS activist visits UTPA for 2005 AIDS Awareness Day

Rae Lewis Thornton, an AIDS activist who has been featured on the cover of Essence magazine and has been in numerous feature stories for Ebony and Emerge magazines, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times and the Washington Post, speaks to students, staff and faculty at The University of Texas-Pan American Student Union Theater Dec.1 at the 2005 AIDS Awareness Day. During her speech, Thornton told UTPA students the best way to prevent contracting AIDS is to practice abstinence. Thornton, who has been infected with HIV since the age of 23, also encouraged students to value their lives and pursue their goals.
