Veterans honored at Nov. 11 ceremony on campus

A Veterans Day Appreciation Ceremony, sponsored by the Student Union at The University of Texas-Pan American was held Friday, Nov. 11 at the University flagpole for students, faculty and staff. ROTC students and staff as well as student veterans assisted Student Union staff in the event planning. Participating in the ceremony were left to right Mark Lopez, undergraduate student majoring in history and Army Reservist who recently served in Iraq; Laura Kizner, graduate student who served in the U.S. Navy; Margaret Draper, UTPA donor; Louis Draper, UTPA donor and World War II veteran; Maribel Garcia (at podium), graduate student and Music Department staff member who sang the national anthem at the ceremony; Sam Smith, director, Enrollment and Student Services Business Services and Student Union and assistant dean of students; Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Rivers, assistant professor of military science; James Langabeer, vice president for Division of Business Affairs; and Dr. Blandina Cárdenas, UTPA president. The ceremony included a playing of "Taps," and several speakers who talked to the crowd of students, faculty and staff about the importance of remembering veterans and their sacrifices for the country. Draper, who talked about his experiences in World War II, urged people to support our current troops in Iraq and Afghanistan by sending letters and supplies, especially during the holidays.
