The University of Texas-Pan American will bring the world to the Rio Grande Valley as the campus celebrates its fifth annual International Week Nov. 14-18 with various speakers, workshops and sessions highlighting a week of culture from all continents.

International Week - which is designated a week each year in November - was created by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education for universities to promote international education and awareness of cultural issues. International Week at UTPA, hosted by the Office of International Programs, will offer the University community and public a series of academic and cultural activities.

Speakers for the week include Joseph M. Bracken, adviser to the Undersecretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs for the U.S. Department of State, who will speak Nov. 17, 7 p.m. in the University Library Auditorium, on "Promoting Human Rights and Democracy Around the World." Dr. Hansel Otero Cobo of Doctors Without Borders will also speak on "Response to Emergencies: In War Zones, Refugee Crisis and Hemorrhagic Fever Outbreak" Nov. 17, 11 a.m. in the Health Sciences and Human Services Building, Room 1.114. Also participating in International Week will be Sheikh Rodwan Saleh, president of the Islamic Society of Greater Houston, who will discuss "Jesus - A Prophet of Islam" Nov. 15, 7 p.m. in the University Library Auditorium.

Special lectures, debates and panel discussions will also be presented at various locations on the UTPA campus by University professors and students organizations throughout the week. Some of the featured topics include "Long Memories, Short Fuses - The Minutemen Project and the Texas Rangers;" "Violence and Abuse Against Hispanic Women with Disabilities;" " U.S., International Relations, the Tsunami and Katrina-Rita Disasters;" "Global Education and NAFTA;" and many more.

Other highlights of International Week include International Cultural Night Nov. 14, 6 p.m. at the University Library Auditorium, which will offer music, dance, exhibits, an international fashion show and Food Festival.
