A recent result of the myriad of efforts at The University of Texas-Pan American in response to the hurricane Katrina disaster was the presentation of check for $5522.35 raised by University students, faculty and staff to the South Texas Chapter of the American Red Cross' Hurricane Relief Fund. Pictured front left to right at a check presentation ceremony Oct. 13, along with some of the many University community members involved in fundraising and or assistance efforts on campus, were Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Rodolfo Arévalo; Jorge Barrientos, community development director for the South Texas Chapter of the American Red Cross; Katrina Luna, administrative associate, Pharmacy Program and staff senate chair; and UTPA President Dr. Blandina Cárdenas. Approximately half of the money was raised from a concert for the community held Sept. 17 organized by the Music Department assisted by the following student organizations: Golden Key International Honour Society, UTPA Ambassadors, Young Adult Catholic Ministry, and Future Music Educators. Music Department ensembles participating in the concert were the UTPA Mariachi, UTPA Mariachi Femenil, and the UTPA Salsa Band. Mariachi Los Arrieros, a community mariachi with both students and UTPA alumni, also participated. Adding to the concert festivities was a food sale sponsored by the City of Edinburg, and H-E-B, both providing food and drinks. The remaining funds were collected from UTPA staff and faculty members.
