You can "rock around the clock" and "twist the night away" when you attend the Fourth Annual Women's Athletics Fundraiser "Fifties Sock Hop" Oct. 22 at the Shary Shivers Estate in Palmview. In its fourth year, the annual fun-filled event, with a different theme each year, raises money to enhance and support the women's athletic programs at The University of Texas-Pan American.

"With the funds we raised last year, we were able to help provide two fifth year scholarships to female Bronc athletes enabling them to complete their education after their NCAA eligibility ran out. They will both graduate in May 2006," said Lynn Jimerson, a University employee and WAF gala chair.

Pictured from left to right are Ashley Roberts, a senior majoring in communications-advertising, and Barbra Cheadle, a senior majoring in sociology, both recipients of a fifth year scholarship for female student-athletes at UTPA to help them complete their education. Both women, who participated on the female Bronc intercollegiate basketball team, expect to graduate May 2006. Proceeds from the annual Women Athletic Fundraiser event, this year a Fifties Sock Hop scheduled for Oct. 22, help support the fifth year scholarship and other needs in the female Bronc athletic programs.
"In the past our fundraising has also helped fund remodeling of facilities as well as support for travel, equipment and uniform expenses," she said.

UTPA women's athletic teams include basketball, volleyball, golf, track and field, cross country and tennis. There are currently 100 female student-athletes at UTPA.

This year's gala - a sock hop straight from the 1950s - is scheduled from 7 p.m.-midnight and will feature live music from Dean Canty's Jazz Band, dancing, hot and cold hors d'oeuvres and other refreshments, live, blackboard and silent auctions, a casino and a number of contests - the twist, rock 'n roll and hand jive in dance as well as bubble gum blowing, hula hoop and best costume competitions. A jukebox and a number of 50s era automobiles will be present with a photographer available to snap your picture with a vintage vehicle or a caricature of some of the most famous personalities of the era.

Tickets are available at $50 per person from Gala Committee members. Sponsors for the event include IBC Bank, The Monitor, Grunwald Printing Co., Valley Coca Cola, Magic Valley Electric Cooperative and Allegiant Air. Sponsorships are still needed for the event at levels from $300 to $5,000. Items for the three different auction venues are being solicited and welcomed.
