Noted Latina playwright Milcha Sanchez-Scott will hold auditions Wednesday, August 17 and Thursday, August 18 for her play "The Old Matador," the first University Theatre fall Main Stage production at The University of Texas-Pan American. Sanchez-Scott will direct the play herself.
Auditions are scheduled for 7 p.m. each night, with call-backs to be announced if needed. The play performs the first week in October, so rehearsals will start August 29. Auditions are open to everyone on campus and also to community members.
Auditions will be held on a first-come basis, but actors who have head shots and resumes will get priority audition times. Scripts are available from the box office (956/381-3581). Actors do not need to read the play but should have, if possible, a one minute audition piece from any contemporary play. A wide variety of ages is needed, from boys 13 and up to mature men and women.
Sanchez-Scott has been a guest of the University a number of times and has seen two other of her plays, "Roosters" and "Latina," performed here.
"UTPA has a wonderful selection of actors from the classes and the community. I would love to see women from "Latina," for instance, audition for this production. Some of the parts are perfect for them," Sanchez-Scott stated.
The play runs October 5-9 at the Albert L. Jeffers Theatre. That weekend, many alumni of the theatre-television-film program will be on campus for a five-year reunion, and many of them will have walk-on parts in the production.
Anyone with a UTPA ID card may get two free admissions to any UTPA production. Schedules are available by stopping by the box office or calling 956/381-3581. Sanchez-Scott, who resides in Hollywood, will be on the UTPA campus for the fall semester. She will also be teaching a special class, COMM 4303.03 - "Special Projects in Dramatic Writing," for those interested in writing stage or screen plays.
