Ten students receive UTPA's first Valley Heroes Memorial Scholarships

Ten students at The University of Texas-Pan American were recently awarded a $1,000 Valley Heroes Memorial Scholarship to help with the cost of their education. Pictured from left to right are recipients Danielle L. Sekula, a senior majoring in management and sister of U.S. Marine Corps Private First Class Dustin Michael Sekula; Christy R. Zapata, a sister of U.S. Army Specialist Mark Zapata; UTPA President Dr. Blandina Cárdenas; Jose Adrian Morales, a senior majoring in social studies composite and Christopher Simoes, a senior majoring in accounting. Not pictured are scholarship recipients Marcus Burgess, a junior majoring in nursing; Tomas Navarro, a senior majoring in electrical engineering; Linda M. Morales, a senior majoring in English; Juan H. Leal, a junior majoring in premedical biology; Jose Quintanilla, a senior majoring in criminal justice and Christopher Gonzalez, a senior majoring in history. The scholarship is available to selected veteran students who have served at least six months of active duty and family members of the 16 fallen Rio Grande Valley soldiers which the scholarship was created to honor.
