MathCounts competition held at UTPA for Valley middle school students

Pictured are some of the 80 students from 12 Rio Grande Valley schools who competed recently in the MathCounts regional competition held at The University of Texas-Pan American Engineering Building. Sponsored by the UTPA School of Engineering and Computer Science and Lone Star National Bank, MathCounts is a math enrichment program targeted to sixth through eighth graders to enhance problem solving skills and interest in math by the students. The competition consists of written and oral testing and includes individual and team competitions. Gutierrez Middle School, Harlingen CISD took first place honors while B.L. Gray Junior High, Sharyland ISD placed second. Both teams advanced to the state competition held March 19 where B.L. Gray placed 20th. The top two individuals in the regional competition were Marris Motiwala, Coakley Middle School, Harlingen CISD and Tiffany Garner from B.L. Gray. Other schools participating were Our Lady of Sorrows, McAllen; South Middle School, Edinburg CISD; Monte Alto Junior High, Monte Alto ISD; San Juan Middle School, PSJA ISD; Ringgold Middle School, Rio Grande ISD; Vernon Middle School, Harlingen CISD; Alonzo De Leon Middle School, and Cathey Middle School, McAllen ISD. The regional event was coordinated by Dr. Subhash Bose, professor and chair of the Department of Manufacturing Engineering at UTPA, who also serves as the coordinator of the RGV MathCounts chapter. UTPA College Access and Support Programs sponsored lunch for the students, coaches and volunteers.
