The University of Texas-Pan American recently hosted a Joint Faculty Science Symposium for faculty members of UTPA's College of Science and Engineering and the College of Health Sciences and Human Services, as well as the Brownsville Regional Campus of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Public Health (SPH). Pictured above is Dr. Wendy Innis-Whitehouse, assistant professor of chemistry at UTPA, who explained her current research on obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Twelve faculty members presented their research endeavors in hopes of collaborating with the SPH and other departments on campus. Some of the research topics discussed included "Cardiac Risk Factors and Health Promoting Behaviors of University Faculty and Staff," "Assessing Gaps in Science Education: Results of Interviews and Focus Groups with Lower Rio Grande Valley Youth and Hispanic Students" and "Tuberculosis Along the Texas-Mexico Border." This event is the first of its kind and is expected to be held annually.
