With graduation around the corner for students at The University of Texas-Pan American, the Office of Career Placement Services is ready to help them get an early start on their job hunting with the 32nd Annual Career Day March 1.

More than 50 employers are expected to be on campus looking to hire their next batch of up and coming recruits in the areas of education, business and government. Students who are seeking internships and permanent placement are encouraged to attend Career Day said Velinda Reyes, interim director of the Office of Career Placement Services.

"As with any career fair, we hope that students attend so that they will be aware of the various career paths they can choose from. There will be top recruiting companies attending this Career Day such as Boeing, Xerox, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Wal-Mart, Target, H-E-B, Sherwin Williams and various state and federal agencies," Reyes said. "This career fair is our biggest of the academic year."

Career Day, which will be held at the UTPA Fieldhouse from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., will have a special twist this year with a free concert featuring two Latin hip hop rap artists Inspector and Akwid. The Office of Career Placement Services in conjunction with the U.S. Navy will sponsor the concert. The musical event is scheduled for March 1 from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. behind the UTPA Fieldhouse.

UTPA was chosen as one of two schools by the Navy to launch the 2005 U.S. Navy College Tour headlined by the Latino artists. The tour will kick off on March 1 at UTPA and move on to the University of Texas San Antonio on March 21 as part of a major effort to increase awareness of Navy opportunities for Hispanic college students.

Navy representatives will be on hand to discuss the details of officer positions in the Navy for Hispanic men and women. The career opportunities offered by the U.S. Navy go beyond the traditional naval skills and include careers in medicine, law, engineering, education and communications among others.

"Career Placement Services is very excited about the Navy's visit to UTPA. The Navy has been very supportive of our activities in the past and this event will assist them in promoting their Officer Programs as well as help our efforts in encouraging students to explore career opportunities available to them," Reyes said.

In addition, the U.S. Navy and Career Placement Services will present Rear Admiral Jose Luis Betancourt Jr., a commander of Navy Region Southwest and a UTPA alumnus, in an open forum on leadership Monday, Feb. 28, from 5-6 p.m. at the University Ballroom. Reyes said Betancourt will share with the audience his success story and offer tips on leadership. During the presentation he will take questions from the UTPA community.

A Career Day Networking Social where students can meet with Career Day recruiters in a more informal session will also be held Feb. 28 at the UTPA Visitors Center from 6-8 p.m.

Reyes said students will be able to sign up for on-campus interviews with a number of Career Day participants at the event or through their online system at Bronc Career Connection (

Reyes stresses that students who plan to attend Career Day should come prepared with an updated résumé and dressed in appropriate professional business attire.

"Students should be prepared to interview on the spot with potential employers at Career Day. They should also research the companies prior to attending the fair and be prepared to network," Reyes said.

Among the Career Day participants this year are AFLAC, Central Intelligence Agency, Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation, H-E-B Grocery Company, South Texas Health System, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, IBC Bank, Internal Revenue Service, Dumas ISD, Garland ISD, Mercedes ISD, McLennan Community College, U.S. Government Accountability Office and many more.
