Chris Garcia, a junior majoring in psychology at The University of Texas-Pan American, explores the internationally celebrated Milestones for Peace art exhibit which opened to the public at the Visitors Center Oct. 12. The free showcase will continue for four months before leaving the Rio Grande Valley. The art project, created by Iris Elhanani and Peruvian artist Ivan Macha in 1999, was designed to trigger public discourse about peace and encourage people to promote a culture of harmony around the world. The nearly 150 stones on display feature an eclectic and interesting array of imaginative interpretations by artists from around the globe. Some stones feature signatures from notable persons such as former President George H.W. Bush, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and actor Richard Gere.
