UTPA Mariachi Aztlan performs at a national competition in New Mexico.

The UTPA Mariachi Aztlan was named "Grand Champion" after competing against 17 other mariachi groups from New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Arizona and California. The competition includes the middle school, high school, college/university and open division levels.

UTPA Mariachi Aztlan also participated in the Spectacular Concert presented at the beautiful Amphitheater, Sandia Casino. The Spectacular Concert featured Mariachi Sol de Mexico and Mariachi America.

The Rio Grande Valley continues to be recognized as the leader in the mariachi education programs in the United States with the UTPA Mariachi Aztlan winning first place and the Mariachi Nuevo Santander of Roma High School also placing in the open division level.

The UTPA Mariachi ensembles are often invited to perform as musical ambassadors to other countries and universities. In March, the UTPA Mariachi performed in Pachuca, Mexico as guest soloists with the Orquestra Sinfonica de la Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Hidalgo at their 75th anniversary celebration, and in July the UTPA Mariachi Aztlan performed in Monterrey, Mexico at the Escuela Normal Superior during their 42nd anniversary.
