The University of Texas-Pan American will celebrate National Student Employment Week, April 12-16.
The week - designated by the National Student Employment Association - recognizes the importance and contributions of the student employee in the workforce. Student employment offers students career-enhancing opportunities, the ability to develop skills relevant in any career and better preparation for the job market upon graduation.
The UTPA Student Employment Services Program will take on a range of activities during the week including a Student Employment Job Fair Tuesday, April 13 at the Student Union from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Local employers will be present and looking to hire part-time or full-time employees during the fair. Expected to participate in the fair will be AFLAC, Obra Homes, Hotels.com, Office Depot, Interstate Battery System of Texas, Vanity Fair Intimates and many others.
"It is appropriate to set aside a special week to draw the awareness of others, both on campus and off, to the contributions student workers make in the multitude of roles they fill," said Enedelia P. Kidd, director of Career Placement Services.
"By celebrating this week, employers will reap the incidental benefits of increasing employer awareness of the service they and their students provide; increasing their employer base and positions available for students; and providing an open forum for discussion of student employment and career-related issues."
The Student Financial Services Office at UTPA will also celebrate National Student Employment Week with the UTPA Work-Study Employee of the Year luncheon Thursday, April 15 at noon in the University Ballroom. The luncheon will honor UTPA's work-study employees and name the Work-Study Employee of the Year, who will also receive a scholarship for their dedication to the job.
