UTPA Mariachi gets national recognition

The University of Texas Pan-American Mariachi won first place in the College-University Division at the Ninth Annual National Mariachi Vargas Group Competition in San Antonio November 22.

The mariachi received the Outstanding College/University Mariachi award and competed against 39 mariachi groups from all over Texas, Oklahoma, California and Arizona.

The newest addition to the UTPA mariachi program, Mariachi Aztlan, also received honors as second place winners.

UTPA received an additional honor with Carla Medina winning first place in the University Vocal Competition.

The Rio Grande Valley was recognized as leaders in the mariachi education with the awards given not only to the UTPA Mariachi, but also Mariachi Nuevo Santander of Roma High School, winning first place at the high school level; and Mariachi Oro of Edinburg North High School, winning second place.

The UTPA Mariachi will showcase their talents in concert Jan.10 -11 at 2 p.m., Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 7-8 at 2 p.m. All concerts will be held at the UTPA Fine Arts Auditorium. Admission is $5 at the door. For more information call 956/381-3471.
