The University of Texas-Pan American Women's Athletics Fundraisers (WAF) encourages faculty and staff to help raise funds for the new Fifth Year Student Athlete Scholarship.

The new scholarship program will help student athletes complete their education during their fifth year at UTPA.

"Our athletes work very hard in representing UTPA at their chosen sport, academically and as a role models for other students," said Lillian Carey, WAF member. "After their NCAA eligibility runs out, we should support them in their fifth year to complete their degree."

The scholarship is part of the UTPA Angel Investor program that allows faculty and staff to contribute financially through payroll deduction. An invitation for contributions has also been extended to the Rio Grande Valley community.

With these contributions, WAF hopes to help students pay for tuition, room, board, books and any additional fees for the academic year.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for a fifth year senior to accomplish her educational goals when she is done competing," said Julie Porter, UTPA Bronc basketball player.

WAF is working hard this year to recruit many interested donors. The goal of WAF is to give away the first scholarship for the fall 2004 semester.

The Women's Athletics Fundraisers was formed in January 2000 under the umbrella of the Bronc Athletic Fundraisers to enhance and support women's athletics at UT Pan American.
