Enthusiasm and hard work has paid off for Hazel Alonso, a senior at The University of Texas-Pan American majoring in international business management. Alonso has been named Intern of the Year by Enterprise Rent-A-Car in District 52, which encompasses all the area in Texas south of San Antonio.

Competing against 44 other interns from numerous other Texas universities, Alonso earned 777 points, compared to last year's winner with 687 points, in being named top intern. Alonso, who has only been in the internship since May 5, said she first had to write a marketing related paper.

At a recent ceremony sponsored by the Southern District 54 of Enterprise Rent-A-Car Hazel Alonso, a senior majoring in international business management at The University of Texas-Pan American, was recognized as Intern of the Year. Present at the ceremony were front left to right Enedelia Kidd, UTPA director of Career Placement Services; Alonso; Susie Chapa, UTPA coordinator of Cooperative Education; and Velinda Reyes, assistant director of Career Placement Services at UTPA. Enterprise Rent-A-Car representatives were rear left to right Juan Medrano, group rental manager; Claudia Vasquez, recruiting supervisor; Morris Ellington, group recruiting manager; and William W. Gold, vice president-general manager.
"I wrote my paper on the bringing the rental truck division, a relatively new division with Enterprise, into the trade zone area in the Valley," said Alonso, who works at the Business 83 - McAllen location. Other criteria to garner points dealt with the numbers and success of employee, car sales and corporate account referrals. Points she gained in these areas also awarded her attendance at every monthly MVP dinner since working there.

Alonso said her internship was a management trainee internship which allowed her to learn and participate in the administrative side of business and to make her own decisions.

"It is really a great company to work for. I have enjoyed my summer and like what Enterprise has to offer. I might stay with them after graduation," Alonso said.

Alonso originally found out about the internship visiting the Enterprise booth at a UTPA career fair organized by the Career Placement Services. She found her internship rewarding and eye-opening.

"It definitely makes you grow up. You realize that there is this whole world out there - it's the real world. It gave me that extra little push to realize that as soon as I get my degree, the sky's the limit," Alonso said.

Susie Chapa, coordinator for Cooperative Education at UTPA said Alonso was the first student intern from UTPA who has received this award from Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

"Hazel's hard work and determination allowed her to receive this outstanding achievement," Chapa said.

Chapa said that internships, such as the one Enterprise offers, provide students the opportunity to obtain direct management training and first hand experience of the business world. "We look forward to the future where other students will have the same opportunity as Hazel," Chapa said.
