The University of Texas-Pan American Alumni Association honored new board members and donated $37,500 for student scholarships during a reception, Aug. 12, at the International Trade and Technology Building.
UTPA President Dr. Miguel A. Nevárez greeted new members thanking them for their efforts in participating on one of the most influential University organizations.
"I am very proud of the UTPA Alumni Association because I have seen it develop over the years since its inception in the early 1970s," Nevárez said.
"I remember approaching then President Dr. Ralph Schilling and telling him why I thought it was so important for our University to maintain a close relationship with its former students. As a result of our discussion and with the help from many others, we were able to convince Dr. Schilling to give us permission to organize the Pan American University Alumni Association."
That year, the association was able to sign up 600 charter members. The names of those charter members were etched into a large plaque that was displayed in the University Library for many years and currently hangs in the Alumni Office.
Today, the association continues seeking alumni support by creating the Lifetime Membership Program and by setting up UTPA Alumni chapters outside of the Rio Grande Valley.
This year's new board members include Frances Trevino, Wendy Smith Sturgis, Dr. Jon P. Patterson, Ofelia Peña, Robert C. Norman and Jose "Joey" Gonzalez.
Returning members are R. D. Guerra, Noble Allen, president-elect; Alejandro Moreno, vice president; Dale Winter, vice president; Maribel Torres, vice president; Yvonne O. Hinojosa, secretary; Rebecca De La Garza, treasurer; Shane Cameron, parliamentarian; Frank Ambriz, Octavio Castañeda, Manuel Cavazos, Dan Polewski, Margie Rocha Santos, Norma Rydl and Diane Willis.
