Cinco de Mayo has been declared Rubén Hinojosa Day at The University of Texas-Pan American College of Education. The college will host a breakfast with the congressman at 8:30 a.m. Monday in the University Ballroom followed by a grant writing workshop.
A dinner program on Thursday, May 15 will kick off a scholarship fund drive in honor of State Representative Roberto Gutierrez.
"Both of these individuals have done so much for education that we wanted to honor them," said Dr. Hilda Medrano, dean of the College of Education. "And what better way to honor them, than by raising funds to help students."
The Grant Writing Conference held from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. includes breakfast with the congressman, lunch and workshops on Finding the Money, Reviewing the Funding Announcement, Working Your Way Through a Request for Proposal, Planning and Writing the Proposal, Preparing the Budget and Targeting Private Funding.
The cost for the day is $100 or to attend just the breakfast is $25. Proceeds will benefit scholarships in the College of Education.
In addition, a Noche de Excelencia featuring a dinner program at Embassy Suites Hotel in McAllen will be held Thursday, May 15 to announce the establishment of the Roberto Gutierrez Graduate Scholarship for the Counseling Program, Medrano said.
The program, in honor of the longtime state representative, will feature a reception with silent auction at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are available for $50 each.
