In an attempt to raise awareness about issues affecting education, The University of Texas-Pan American Center for Applied Research in Education will host a one-day Teacher Excellence Conference April 11 that will bring together some of the most influential and dynamic speakers in public and higher education.

The conference - to be held at the UTPA Xochitl Room Union from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. - is being organized to unite teachers, practitioners and superintendents from across the Rio Grande Valley in learning about important issues affecting the teaching process in public schools.

Topics to be discussed at the conference include education and finance, pedagogy, community and school relations, and testing in public schools.

F. Scott McCown - retired Travis County Judge who worked in state government for 20 years and presided over the Edgewood school finance cases, which involve the effect of local property wealth on the ability of school districts to fund education - will speak about his extensive experience dealing with school finance.

Speaking on the pedagogy panel discussion will be Jim Scheurich and Sofia Villenas from the University of Texas at Austin and Author David Rice.

The event will end with a dinner and speech from Keynote Speaker Angela Valenzuela, UT Austin professor and author of the award winning book "Subtractive Schooling." Valenzuela will speak about the testing mania that is affecting schools across the state.
