Chi Chi Rodriguez - one of greatest showmen in sports history - will be the star attraction at the third annual Pan Am Classic scheduled for Saturday, April 12 at Los Lagos Golf Course in Edinburg.
"We here at The University of Texas-Pan American have been working hard to make the Pan Am Classic the Valley's premiere attraction for golfers and Chi Chi Rodriguez is not only a great golfer but a great entertainer," said Roland S. Arriola, vice president of External Affairs.
Rodriguez is famous for his colorful "sword dance" which he does when he successfully putts for birdie or on the 18th hole when finishing a round. He turns his putter into a matador's sword, slashes and stabs into the air and then dramatically puts the pretend sword back into its sheath before walking off the green to the applause of an appreciative gallery. In a career that spans four decades, Rodriguez has won eight times on the PGA Tour and 22 times on the Senior Tour.
"This is a world class talent, we're fortunate to have him attend our event," said Mark Lacy chairman of the Pan Am Classic organizing committee. "We think he'll go a long way towards making this fundraiser a success."
All profits from this event go to benefit university scholarships.
Winners will get $2000 in prize money per flight with a $5000 guaranteed cash shootout to follow the tournament.
In keeping with tradition, the UTPA Men's Golf Team will once again host a junior golf clinic (with a little help from Chi Chi himself) for kids ages six through 12.
Hispanic Magazine, Blockbusters, Gateway Printing and the City of Edinburg have been among the long time supporters of this golf tournament.
Anyone wanting sponsorship information or wanting to sign up to play or to sign up for the clinic call 956/381-5301.
