Auditions will be held for the 1920's hit musical, "Good News" presented by the University Theatre, Feb. 26-March 2, as part of the 75th anniversary celebration at The University of Texas Pan American.
Auditions will be held Dec. 5-6, so that casting can be completed and costume measurements taken before the Christmas break. Rehearsals will begin in January.
Auditions will start each night promptly at 6:45 p.m. in the Studio Theatre, located in the Communication Arts Building, room 107. Registration for auditions will be from 6:45-7 p.m.
Choreographer Melinda Blomquist will hold group dance auditions promptly at 7 p.m. Those auditioning should wear clothing that allows them to move freely. Blomquist will demonstrate a few simple moves participants will be asked to follow.
Stage Director Pam McEnnis - an experienced Broadway musical theatre actress - is looking for men and women who can sing and dance, and some in-betweens who can move and carry a tune.
Most of the roles are for college aged students. Several roles are available for more mature types, up to age 40.
Those interested in auditioning are asked to bring in a piece of sheet music in their key, or bring in their own tape/CD accompaniment. They must keep the singing to no more than 32 bars.
All those auditioning will be reading from the "Good News" script. While most of the roles require people who sing and dance, a few small non-singing, non-dancing roles for males are available. In addition, there is a singing and dancing male and female chorus that does not require acting experience.
If callbacks are needed, they will be scheduled on Dec. 7. As soon as the cast list is posted, those selected will be given appointments to get measured. Scripts and scores will be distributed when they arrive, sometime during the Christmas beak.
Rehearsals will start Jan. 13, with the possibility of a Jan. 6 start for dance and movement rehearsals.
The play is co-sponsored by the University Theatre and the UTPA 75th Anniversary Committee.
"It was chosen because it opened when Pan American did, and the school was very good news for the Rio Grande Valley," said designer Tom Grabowski.
