Nominations now accepted for Notable Valley Hispanics exhibit

The University of Texas-Pan American Library is accepting nominations through Sept. 1 for the eighth annual "Notable Valley Hispanics" exhibit, which will coincide with National Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

According to George Gause, UT Pan American's Special Collections librarian, the nominees must be living, of Hispanic origin and been born or now living in the Rio Grande Valley.

Persons nominated should generally be involved in either civic and/or humanitarian activities and be considered a community leader. These candidates also should have conducted significant work or activity in the Valley.

People previously named Notable Valley Hispanics are not eligible.

Along with the exhibit, the UTPA Friends of the Library will sponsor a Notable Valley Hispanic program at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6 in the Media Theater, adjacent to the University Library.

Last year's recipients were Homero Gallegos of McAllen, Mayor Baldemar Garza of Rio Grande City, Yvonne "Bonnie" Gonzalez of Mercedes, Carlota M. Gutierrez of Edinburg and Maricela Hernandez of Weslaco.

Also, Blanca Estela Meckel of McAllen, Hector "Tito" Palacios of San Juan, Alma Irene Pena of Weslaco, Judge Rose Guerra Reyna of McAllen, Delisia T. Rios of Mission and Dr. Robert Sepulveda of Weslaco.
