Christina Infante, a Lady Bronc golfer at The University of Texas-Pan American, was the recent recipient of the Anheuser-Busch/Ann LaMantia Endowed Scholarship for fall 2002.

The Anheuser-Busch/Ann LaMantia Endowed Scholarship was recently awarded to Christina Infante, a Lady Bronc golfer at The University of Texas-Pan American, for fall 2002. Pictured are, from left, Val LaMantia Peisen, advertising/public relations partner for L&F Distributors; Infante; and Roland S. Arriola, vice president for External Affairs.
A graduate of Lyford High School, Infante is a junior marketing major with a 3.5 grade point average. She said the scholarship will come in handy this semester as she prepares for her second season with the golf team.

"I'm very thankful this scholarship is available for students like me who have difficulty paying for college," said Infante, who joined the golf team as a walk-on. "I really wanted to play golf, and I was the only one on the team that was not on a scholarship, so this is great."

Like many students at UTPA, Infante worked and commuted to school. Receiving the scholarship allowed her to quit her job and concentrate on school and golf.

"I was struggling a lot with the drive, the 20 hours of practice and going to work, all at the same time," she said. "Financially, this scholarship lifted a burden off my family and me. I feel really blessed that I got this scholarship."

Because of her exceptional GPA and golf skills, Infante has received several awards, including her most recent honor as a member of the National Golf Coaches Association 2001-2002 All-Scholar Team. She also received the 2002 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars Award, been named to the UTPA Dean's List and been a member of the Bronc Pride 3.0 Club.

The Anheuser-Busch/Ann LaMantia Endowed Scholarship is offered to full-time UTPA female student-athletes of any classification. Athletes who apply for the scholarship are required to have a good academic record and must be nominated by their coach.

For the past 10 years, the scholarship has been exclusively offered to UTPA on behalf of L&F Distributors of South Texas and Anheuser-Busch.

"UTPA is the only university we have a scholarship with because they are well-founded in the Valley, and they have cultivated the relationship we have together," said Val LaMantia Peisen, advertising/public relations partner for L&F Distributors.

Peisen said her mother, Ann LaMantia - whom the scholarship was named for - was a big supporter of women's athletics. She hopes this scholarship inspires female student-athletes to pursue their passion for sports and learning.

"Women athletes don't have a lot of the same chances as men in sports," Peisen said. "I think (this scholarship) is a good way to say 'keep going' and a good pat on the back.

Past scholarship recipients include Adriana Espinoza of Laredo, golf; Misty Cook of Gransbury, Texas, track and field; and Erin Buttery of Colorado Springs, basketball.
