Children ages 6-13 can learn the basics of golf from members of The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs and Lady Broncs golf teams Saturday, April 20 during a free junior golf clinic at Los Lagos Golf Club in Edinburg.
The free golf clinic, from 10-11:30 a.m., is part of the annual UTPA Foundation Pan Am Classic golf tournament.
"We want to introduce golf to Rio Grande Valley residents that may not be exposed to the sport," said Lady Broncs Golf Coach Barbara Odale. "We also want to show (participants) how much fun golf can be."
Members of the Broncs and Lady Broncs golf teams will help young golfers learn fundamentals, such as putting, chipping, full swing and terminology.
"We want to teach them some basic skills that they might improve upon throughout the year," Odale said.
Children who participate will receive prizes, including caps, golf videos, carry-on bags and two free tickets to the last Broncs home baseball game.
Golf balls and clubs will be provided to participants, but children also can bring their own clubs. Participants are encouraged to pre-register before the event.
The Pan Am Classic begins at 8:30 a.m. The format is two-player teams select-drive, one low ball, with the lowest member's handicap determining flight (three flights). Prizes will be $2,000 per flight.
In addition to the tournament, 35 people will have a chance to win a million dollars at the Blockbuster Million Dollar Shootout following the tournament.
Tournament proceeds will go to student scholarships. Also, several sponsorship opportunities are available - Ace, Eagle, Birdie, Par, Beer Cart and Hole.
