In an effort to improve retention rates at The University of Texas Pan-American, the office of Student Financial Services and Scholarships has created a Retention Scholarship program for entering students.

Griselda C. Castilla, assistant director of financial aid, said the $500-per-semester scholarship recognizes students for their academic excellence and helps UTPA improve retention rates. Seventy-six percent of fall 2000 freshmen were enrolled for spring 2001.

"This program is aimed towards entering students, and we hope that this scholarship will assist them in their second year of college," said Castilla.

Kristy Gonzales, an accounting junior, was one of 108 students awarded the scholarship for 2000-2001 and said the scholarship was a big help for her school expenses.

"It helped me with my books and other supplies," Gonzales said. "I was excited and surprised because I didn't know it existed."

Students eligible for the one-year scholarship were automatically selected based on the following criteria: be an entering freshmen in fall 2000, earn at least 24 hours in the first two semesters and maintain a grade point average higher than a 3.0.
