Edinburg Regional Medical Center will announce the initiation of a $30,000 annual contribution to The University of Texas Pan-American College of Health Sciences and Human Services for nursing student scholarships, which will be matched by the UTPA Foundation.
J. Chris Smolik, CEO of Edinburg Regional, will present Dr. Helen Castillo, dean of the College of Health and Human Services, with a contribution Friday, Oct. 5 at 2:30 p.m. in the Executive Room of the International Trade and Technology Building.
The new scholarship program will provide 20 nursing seniors with a $3,000 scholarship and an opportunity for a paid internship at the Edinburg hospital. Scholarship participants will be required to participate in a summer clinical concentration program of 32 hours a week for six weeks. Students will rotate through the hospital during their internship, gaining experience in different nursing units such as rehabilitation, the emergency room, and pediatrics.
